We’re Not in Virginia Anymore Toto! Sunday September 18 Team Prime Time had a great night’s sleep “swinging on the hook”. Actually, it was so calm I don’t think we moved all night. It did rain for about an hour around midnight. We had some cereal and departed this special anchorage around 0800. From the Pungo River, we cruised south on the Pamlico River, onto the Nuese River, past Oriental, NC, across the Adams Creek Canal, and finally into the Morehead City/ Beaufort NC area. No peaks…no valleys… We had a reservation at the Beaufort City Docks. This marina has the well-deserved reputation for having strong currents racing through the docks. Mark made an extremely difficult stern-to docking maneuver look ridiculously easy. Even the seasoned dock staff admired and commented on Mark’s skills at the helm ! I think that they secretly hope to see some “train wrecks”…and they do! It was about 1700 when we docked. I ran up the docks to the office to check Prime Time in and borrow a loaner car…we needed some provisions. The Dockmaster walked me across the street and behind some buildings where one of their loaner cars was parked. He said that they hadn’t been driven since Hurricane Ophelia came through here last week. He gave me the keys to a real beauty…an old Buick wagon. After getting directions to the Piggly Wiggly (a grocery store), I was off. I was surprised to see how many branches and even complete trees had been blown down. All of a sudden, I felt myself being bitten all over. I looked down at my legs…ANTS! They were crawling all over me. I stopped the car and brushed them off as best I could. On to the store… I had an emergency vehicle pass me on the way back to the dock. I pulled into the parking lot and saw the paramedics gathered on the Dockside Restaurant patio. As I walked up to get a dock cart, I saw them performing CPR on a man. I have been in the “heart business” for years and have seen lots of codes. I immediately could see that this was not going well. Some people were crying, some just watching, and some even continued to eat the entire time this drama played out. Bizarre! Unfortunately, the man didn’t survive. Team Prime Time along with Wayne and Chris from Ribbit had dinner at the Dockside Restaurant. We had a decent cheeseburger and a couple of beers…not bad!
Tomorrow, Prime Time would head offshore while Ribbit stayed in the ICW. We needed another good night’s sleep…
